1. Chaplin Paternity Case Develops (The Paris News, Dec. 15, 1944)
PARIS, TEXAS, FRIDAY AFTERNOON, DECEMBER 15, 1944
LOS ANGELES, (AP)--Joan Berry's lawyer has given a preliminary O.K. to the jury candidates, and Friday Charlie Chaplin's attorney resumes interrogation of eight women and four men tentively seated to try her charge that the comedian fathered her baby.
Some indication of the defense case was given in questions asked prospective jurors late Thursday by Charles E. Millikan, the comedian's attorney.
"If Mr. Chaplin should admit that some time prior to November, 1942, he had sexual relations with Miss Berry--freely and voluntarily on the part of both parties, that is--would that admission cause you to believe he must have had sexual relations with her in December, 1942?" He asked one prospective juror.
Auburn-haired, 24 year-old Miss Berry, seeking to establish her former drama mentor as the father of her 14-months-old Carol Ann and demanding ,500 monthly support for the child, alleges that conception took place in December, 1942.
Chaplin's lawyer, dignified and reserved, profounded such questions to prospective jurors as:
"If Mr. Chaplin should try to show that during December, 1942, Miss Berry had sexual relations with another man or other men--would you resent that?"
"Do you have any opinion that because some time a man has had sexual relations with a woman he should be required to support her child regardless of whether he is the father?"

2. Alice Faye Says Phil Can Be the Film Star (The Paris News, Nov. 13, 1949)
By HOWARD C. HEYN
HOLLYWOOD (AP)--Alice Faye, as fetchingly blonde as ever and as slim as a model, says Phil Harris will be the movie star in their family from now on.
"I'm happy to be doing just exactly what I've been doing for four years," she said at the Fibber McGee and Molly cocktail party the other night. What she's been doing since the fall of 1945, when the completed "Fallen Angel," is being Mrs. Harris, housewife and mother. And for the Faye-Harris radio season, she is Mrs. Harris on the air also.
"I owe the studio one picture, but I'm never going to make it--or, I think now, any other picture," she said. "Harris is going to be the family's star. He has just finished "Wabash Avenue," and he's wonderful. No, I haven't seen it, but I know he's wonderful. It's in color and, boy, does that wavy hair look good in color!"
